If you have a brain injury, the effects may have changed your life, from having to re-learn everyday skills to dealing with emotional and physical problems. The possible effects of acquired brain injury may include:
- Anxiety, depression and difficulty controlling anger
- Memory and concentration problems

- Loss of senses such as sight, smell, taste
- Communication problems
- Relationship issues arising from the above
At Headway East Sussex, we provide a range of services that will help you to manage the effects of your brain injury. We provide individual rehabilitation programmes to ensure you are equipped with the skills, support and techniques to cope effectively with living with a brain injury.
The 5 R’s Model
Headway East Sussex has developed the 5 R’s model for its service delivery which ensures our clients and their families receive the type and level of service they require to meet their individual needs.
Reassurance
This is the first line of support provided by our Advice and Support team, who offer emotional and practical advice and support to people with an acquired brain injury and their relatives and carers.
Our Reassurance services are free of charge and include:
- Initial assessment
- Advice and information, including advice on funding of services
- Telephone support
- Evening support groups
- Carers’ services
- Family information days
- Taster sessions

Rehabilitation
Active rehabilitation programmes with input from specialist therapists can be provided. This is based at our Newick Centre on weekdays but incorporates an outreach service in the community. For more information click on the link below:
Reablement
Reablement is the next steps in helping people rebuild their lives within the community. This can comprise sessions at our Newick Centre and our outreach service. For more information, click on the links below:
Respite
We recognise that some people will require long-term support to help maintain their skills and function, improve their quality of life and provide respite for relatives and carers to sustain the home and social situation.
Rediscover Group
Our Rediscover Group aimed at those with residual symptoms that are preventing them re-entering the workplace. It will involve working within a supportive group at our Newick Centre where clients can re-learn, gain or rediscover important workplace and life skills.
